As a reminder to all healthcare facility teams, routine maintenance of Carbon Monoxide (CO) monitors is required under NFPA 99: Health Care Facilities Code to ensure the safe operation of gas delivery systems and the protection of patients and staff.
What NFPA 99 Requires:
Per NFPA 99 (2021), Section 5.1.3.6.3, all CO monitoring equipment must be inspected and tested at least annually and maintained in accordance with manufacturer recommendations. Additionally, Section 5.1.14.7.6 requires that CO monitors be calibrated at least annually, or more frequently if recommended by the manufacturer.
Why It Matters:
Carbon monoxide is a silent, odorless threat. In a healthcare environment, any undetected leak could pose serious health risks. Regular maintenance ensures:
- Compliance with NFPA 99 and accreditation standards
- Reliable early-warning performance of your CO monitors
- Extended life and proper calibration of detection equipment
